Trestle often receives questions about the fidelity of our line type data and our confidence in the results. In other words, what is our coverage and accuracy?
Use Cases #
Typical use cases where line type data is used for decisioning:
- TCPA compliance (in the U.S.)
- Lead assessment
- Lead prioritization
- Fraud and abuse checks
This knowledge base article provides more details on how line type data (and other phone metadata attributes) can be used for necessary filtering and decisioning for these use cases. Our philosophy on not just line type but also phone validation and the importance of each attribute is covered on this Phone Validation API blog post.
Line Type Coverage and Accuracy #
Trestle provides 99+% coverage for line type data for valid phone numbers in the U.S., differentiating on its accuracy by leveraging near real-time carrier data and a unique approach to determining line type for each number with greater fidelity.
For example, we track more than 3,600 carriers across the U.S. with great detail, including over 750 MVNOs (Mobile Virtual Network Operators – Carriers leasing from other established mobile network operators). This carrier data is updated near real-time (typically, port requests take up to 15 minutes to process on mobile-carrier to mobile-carrier ports), reducing compliance or fraud risks.
We then determine the phone line type using signals from specific carriers, network aggregators, and publicly available information about the carrier, what plans they offer, etc. This proprietary approach produces a greater level of fidelity than simply identifying landline vs mobile. For example, rather than just saying it is a VoIP phone, it allows us to provide separate categories like fixed VoIP (e.g., Comcast Business) and non-fixed VoIP (e.g., Skype Voice), which are generally considered riskier.
