Trestle’s Verify Contact Integration Guide for Clay provides instructions on using our Real Contact API from your Clay table. This integration allows you to verify contacts, identify connected/disconnected phone lines, and grade contacts based on the likelihood of connecting.
The Verify Contact can be queried directly through Clay, or you can sign up with Trestle and add your API key to Clay.
Please Note: Available for U.S. only
Getting Started #
To get started, login to your Clay account and select the table where you want to verify contacts.
Click the blue “Add Enrichment” button or “Add Column” > then “Add Enrichment.”
Search “Trestle” to see the enrichment options.
Verify Contact (Three Clay credits per contact)
This option queries our Real Contact API and allows you to provide name + phone number and email address. It will provide contact grades based on if the name provided matches the phone number + email address. We will also return a Phone Activity Score and phone metadata like line type (e.g., mobile, landline, fixed or non-fixed VoIP, etc.).

Also available is:
Validate Phone Number (One Clay credit per number)
This option queries our Phone Validation API and allows you to validate phone numbers, returning an activity score to determine active vs inactive phone lines and phone metadata like line type (e.g., mobile, landline, fixed or non-fixed VoIP, etc.).
For Validate Phone Number instructions, please visit the guide.
Verify Contact #
Once “Verify Contact” has been selected, this window will pop up.
Account:
Select if you would like to use a Clay-managed Trestle account (3 credits per contact) OR if you would like to bring your own API key from Trestle.
If you would like to use your own Trestle API key, click the dropdown menu under “Select Trestle Account.”

Click “Add Account.”
Then paste in your API key from Trestle which can be found on the Developer Portal.
Name your API key and click “Save.”
Setup Inputs #
For Verify Contact, there are two required input fields: Name and Phone Number.
Name requires first + last name in the same column. The API will not provide name matching if only a first or last name is provided.
Click the Full Name dropdown and select the column where the name is located.
Click the “Phone Number” dropdown and select the column where the phone number is located.
Repeat steps for each of the additional fields you would like to include in the input.

Phone Activity Score (Optional)
This field allows you to select which Activity Score dispositions you would like to be considered valid/good phone numbers.
The Phone Activity Score ranges from 0-100 and is a confidence level that a phone number is active or inactive.
Select “Good” if you would only like the highest confidence numbers to be marked as valid.
Select “Good and Uncertain” if you would like both highest confidence numbers and uncertain confidence numbers to be marked as valid.
We recommend selecting Good and Uncertain; otherwise, you may filter out some good phone numbers.
Mobile Phone Only
This field allows you to select if only mobile phone numbers should be considered valid. If you would like to filter out landline, VoIP, toll-free, etc., click this toggle to enable.
Once these steps are complete, click “Continue to add fields.”
Add Data as Columns to Your Table #
Select which data outputs you would like added as a column:
- Phone Is Valid: This field checks phone number syntax and if the number is assigned to a carrier. Phone Activity Score and Mobile Phone Only settings will impact if a number returns valid or invalid.
- Phone Activity Score: A score range of 0-100 based on past 12 months of phone activity.
- Phone Line Type: Line type indicating if the phone is landline, mobile, fixed or non-fixedVoIP, toll-free, etc.
- Phone Name Match: The contact name provided is associated with the phone number provided
- Phone Contact Grade: An A-F grade based on how contactable the phone number is. More details on contact grading can be found in this knowledge base article.
- Email Is Valid: Is the email address provided valid?
- Email Contact Grade: An A-F grade based on how contactable the email address is.
Once you have selected the fields you would like returned in the response, click “Save.” Once saved, these columns will be added automatically to your table.
Run the Query #
Once your columns have been added, it is time to run the query. Select the “Play” button in the cell to run a single line, or select the “Play” button in the column header to run the whole column.
Troubleshooting #
Number Format Incorrect #
Clay does not currently have a cell format specifically for phone numbers. It is recommended that each column containing a phone number be set to “Data Type” or “Text.” This will maintain the phone number format. Whereas, if “Data Type” is “Number” the phone number format will include commas (i.e., 1,112,223,334).
Response Columns Don’t Populate #
On occasion, you may find that the response columns you added do not automatically populate with the response data. This is an easy fix:
- Select the cell beneath the Verify Contact header. This will open a cell details page.
- Select the field that is not populating. This will open a mapping window.
- In the mapping window, you will see a list of your existing columns. Select the column that corresponds to the data field you need to populate.
- Repeat for all data fields that are not populating.
